About the event

A 3-part series of lectures and basic projects for an overview of the art, theory, and execution of Theater Costume Design!


NOTE: Registration ends January 7.

For ages 12 and up. (Parents, please take note that there will be several lectures). We are limited to 24 spots.

All project supplies such as fabric, sewing machines, thread, needles, etc, will be provided.

Please bring:

• a notebook and writing utensil

• colored pencils

• computer, iPad, or other device for creating character profiles on Pinterest OR go "old school" with paper, pencils, and fabric

• water bottle

Workshop #1

January 11th 6:00pm-9:00pm

The Art of Costuming

6:00-7:15 with Calvin Brown

  • The significance of costumes
  • Character analysis
  • Color and lines plus lighting

7:15-7:45 with Sarah Diederich

  • Fabric and textures

7:45-9:00 with Calvin Brown

  • Examine popular characters done by different theaters
  • Project: On paper or digitally, design several costume profiles of characters from musicals

Workshop #2

January 15th 9:00am-12:00pm

The Practical Side of Costuming

9:00-10:00 with Sarah Diederich

  • History of fashion
  • Shop layout/organization
  • Designing a show
  • Planning, prep and production

10:00-11:00 with Sarah Diederich

  • Project: Using items in the shop, design costumes from musicals

11:00-12:00 with Caitlin Tulloch

  • Sewing machine basics (setup, threading, winding bobbins, straight stitch, zig-zag stitch)

Workshop #3

January 18th 6:00pm-9:00pm

Costume Construction

6:00-6:15 with Sarah Diederich

  • Fabric and supplies resources

6:15-7:00 with Caitlin Tulloch and Jackie Ramsay

  • Cutting and using sewing patterns (show examples)
  • Stitching/altering a garment (show a garment under construction and how it will be fitted to the actor)

7:00-9:00 with Caitlin Tulloch and Jackie Ramsay

  • Project: Cut and sew a full skirt with a waistband and hem, alter pants or vest (or work on a project needed for the upcoming CFA musical)
